I always ask permission before I take from a plant. You have probably heard me say that before.
Before I harvest, I ask it to pull back its energy, and I give thanks often during the process. I try to come into right relationship in honoring nature this way.
I thought I understood what that looked like – to live in reciprocity and respect with Mother Earth.
Then I went on a foraging walk, and something happened that I was not really prepared for. 🙃
At my initial greeting with Nettle, I offered my usual gratitude exchange and began harvesting.
Then I felt it.
A brief, rolling wave of energy, like a current of information, moved swiftly through the patch around me. 😳
There is no doubt it was communication. And I stood witness as a knowing passed between them, quiet and immediate.
I wasn’t looking for it. I wasn’t in ceremony, I wasn’t in a heightened receptive state. I was just there, in a shady forest park, and it came through anyway. That’s how palpable it was.
It only lasted a moment, but I felt it in my body.
I’ve been connecting with the plant and animal kingdom for years now, but this was different. This was the living conversation between the plants themselves, and I was allowed to witness it – to physically feel it – unfolding.
(I wrote about this experience briefly in a post I only shared on Substack, if you’re interested in reading more… An Energy Weather Report – Energy Alchemist )
But today, I really want to talk about what it stirred in me.
How many of us move through the plant world every single day, taking, consuming, cooking, without ever once stopping to consider what we’re working with?
I think it’s past time to reclaim our relationship with the Earth, and look at her again with the eyes of the beginner.
There’s an herb sitting in your kitchen right now. You might even use it the next time you cook. You may even have it growing in your garden or on your windowsill.
Have you ever introduced yourself?
Have you ever asked its name or its story? Or its legends? Or the wisdom it has to offer?
That’s exactly what we’re doing in Root & Ritual: A Plant Relationship Series.
Our first gathering is June 22 on Zoom, and we’re starting with Oregano.
Yep! The one you probably already have on hand!
Together, We’ll journey to meet it. We’ll explore its history, its legends, and the stories woven around it across centuries and cultures. And we’ll make something simple with our hands to bring the relationship home. While we nurture our shared connection in a Sacred space and community container.
This is not an herbalism class.
It’s an invitation into living in right relationship with the plant world – one ally at a time.
Join us June 22 | 5pm PT | $50 | Zoom | Space is Limited
